Get the Drainage Right or Nothing Lasts

The hidden hero of every outdoor renovation in Bali is drainage. A beautiful new terrace that pools water will crack, breed mould and eventually push damp into the house; a deck without ventilation underneath rots from below. We design the falls, drains and sub-surface ventilation first, then build the finish on top. Decks: the Frame Under the Boards Decides How Long They Last

Most failed decks we see in Bali did not fail at the boards. The joists sat directly on a wet slab, the frame had no airflow, the fixings were plain steel, and within a few wet seasons the substructure rotted or rusted while the top still looked fine. We rebuild decks on raised pedestals or treated-hardwood joists with ventilation gaps and drainage underneath, stainless or galvanised fixings near the coast, and boards in treated hardwood such as bengkirai or merbau — or composite where the owner wants less maintenance. Hardwood decking runs IDR 1.8–3 million per m² supplied and built, including the ventilated sub-structure.

Pergolas and Bale: Timber, Bamboo or Steel

A pergola or bale takes the full sun and rain of an open terrace. Treated hardwood gives the classic Bali look and needs re-oiling; bamboo is cheaper and lighter but needs treating and replacing more often; powder-coated steel with a timber or louvred top lasts longest near the ocean. We size posts and footings for wind on exposed sites, keep timber off the ground on stone or steel shoes so termites and splash water cannot reach it, and flash the roof so it does not drip onto the deck. New pergolas and bale start from around IDR 25 million, depending on size and material.

Terrace Paving That Drains

A terrace should shed a tropical downpour in minutes. When we rebuild one, the base is laid to a fall away from the house, with a drain line or channel at the low edge and a gap between terrace and wall so water cannot sit against the render. The surface follows the use: rough-cut andesite or paras stone around pools for grip, honed stone or pavers on dining terraces, gravel and stepping stones where the garden needs to soak water in. Terrace rebuilds, drainage and landscaping are priced from a site measure, because the condition of the existing base decides most of the cost.

Outdoor Kitchens and Bars That Survive the Rain

An outdoor kitchen in Bali lives under a roof edge at best, so it is built like an exterior, not like an indoor kitchen moved outside. Carcasses are masonry, aluminium or marine ply on raised plinths so splash water and ants cannot reach them; worktops are sealed stone or terrazzo; the sink drains to a proper trap, not onto the garden; and every socket and light is rated for outdoor use on its own circuit. We place the grill downwind of the living areas and give it a non-combustible back wall and a hood or chimney where smoke would otherwise sit under the roof. Outdoor kitchens and bars are priced by scope after a site visit, usually together with the terrace they sit on.
