Fix the Leak Before You Resurface
The most expensive mistake in pool renovation is resurfacing a beautiful new finish over an unrepaired structural crack or leaking fitting — within months the leak reappears and the new surface is compromised. We pressure-test the plumbing and inspect the shell first, repair what is failing, and only then resurface. For pools on coastal or sloping sites we also check the surrounding deck and terrace waterproofing, since a leaking pool often takes the deck with it. Resurfacing, Re-Plastering or Retiling: Which One Your Pool Needs
Three different jobs hide behind “redo the pool”. Resurfacing puts a new interior finish — plaster, pebble or a cementitious coating — over a sound, prepared shell. It fixes a rough, chalky or stained surface and is the cheapest route back to clear-looking water, from around IDR 45 million for a standard villa pool. Re-plastering is resurfacing done properly on an old pool: the failed plaster is chipped off back to the concrete, hollow patches are cut out, and the new coat goes onto a clean, keyed shell instead of over the old layer. Retiling replaces the waterline band or the whole mosaic lining, usually with new coping stones — IDR 80–180 million depending on size and tile — and is the right call when tiles are lifting or the look is simply dated.
How we decide: we drain the pool, tap-test the old surface, check the waterline and coping for movement, and run the leak checks described above. A sound shell with a tired surface gets resurfaced; lifting tiles along a whole wall mean a retile; an active leak gets fixed first, whichever finish follows.
Pumps, Filters and Salt Chlorinators: Replacing the Equipment
Many villa pools still run on the pump and sand filter they were built with: noisy, often oversized for the pool and running for hours longer than needed. A plant upgrade — a correctly sized pump, a new filter, a salt chlorinator and re-run pipework where the old runs leak — starts from around IDR 18 million. It is the change guests notice least and owners notice most, in clearer water and lower running costs. We also move plant rooms that flood in the wet season and shade equipment that bakes in the sun.
For rental villas the pool is out of use for 2–4 weeks, mostly curing time before refilling, so we book pool works into gaps in the calendar or the low season and give you the refill date in writing before we start.
