We design differently depending on use. A private owner's kitchen is about the finishes and the cooking experience; a rental-villa kitchen is about durability and easy cleaning between guests, where every surface needs to survive a stranger every three days. Open kitchens need a roof line, not just a wall. Most villa kitchens open onto the living room or terrace. That works when the roof overhang or a glazed screen keeps driving rain off the worktops, and when the cooking zone sits on the side the wind blows away from, so smoke leaves the house instead of crossing the sofa. Extraction is ducted, not recirculated — a recirculating hood only moves grease around a humid room — and we leave ventilation openings above the cabinets for cross-airflow.
